"I'm Bren, and I'm too fat."
"And I'm James, and I'm too thin."
We've decided to write a blog together through the Summer as we work on our mutual weight loss and weight gain issues. So, let's start with James, who is going to tell you about what it's like to be too thin.
"James, what do you not like about being too thin?"
"I hate it when I shop for pants and you can't find pants that are your waist size that aren't too short in the legs. If the legs are long enough, the waist is too big."
"James, how tall are you?"
"5' 4" tall".
"And seriously, how much do you weigh?"
"Well, it fluctuates, but usually it's about 95 to 97 lbs."
"Wow! That is thin. Have you always been thin?"
"Yes."
"How old are you?"
"25 years old"
"Do people ever think you are younger than you really are?"
"Yes, about a week or two ago a random lady at Ralph's thought I was 20."
"Well, that's not so bad, at least she didn't think you were 12 or something...'course the facial hair might have given her a clue about that. Ok, so, it's hard to find pants. What else?"
"Clothes in general can be more of a challenge."
"So, what have you tried in the past in order to gain weight?"
"Eating more healthy. Eating more. Eating more protein. And trying to eat more salt to retain water."
(Laughing) "So, wouldn't that just give you more water weight?"
"But, hey, it was my doctor who said it."
"Well, doctors say funny things sometimes. So, what are you thinking of doing this Summer that is different from what you have tried before?"
"We've decided to research more about it, because I'm not really sure what to do, since I tried pretty much everything else."
"Ok, great. Have you talked with any experts, other than your doctor?"
"No, not yet, but I am considering that."
"Well, maybe you can interview them and tell us what they say here in the blog. I'm sure there are other people out there who may be interested in the best methods for gaining weight. Wait....you're don't mean you just want to gain fat do you?"
"Muscle, although some fat might help a little bit too."
"Ok, that sounds better. You don't want to be like me, do you?"
"No."
"Ok, so why don't you interview me now?"
"Well, I don't know what to ask?"
"Well, ask me about my statistics, like how much I weigh, how tall I am, stuff like that."
"How much do you weigh, and how tall are you?"
"I am 5' 9" tall and I currently weigh 231.8 lbs."
"Did you always weigh that much?"
"No. When I was in college I weighed between 150 and 160 lbs."
"That was pretty good."
"Pretty good?! That was really good. I was lean and strong then. Now I'm ..well, sort of strong, but pretty fat...obese is what the technical term is."
"So what are you doing to help solve this?"
"Well, recently, I bought a fitbit."
"They're actually pretty cool."
"And when I started 2 weeks ago, I weighed 235 lbs. So, actually, I have lost 3.2 lbs. in 2 weeks!"
"That's a pretty good job."
"Thank you."
"How did you do that?"
"I have been walking at least 10,000 steps per day, and tracking everything that I eat and trying to eat 500 calories less per day than what I am burning by walking and just living my life."
"What have you learned?"
"Well, it's going to take a lot of work and a lot of walking to make it to my goal. I've been losing about 0.22857143 pounds per day."
"ABOUT?"
"Well, I made a spreadsheet, using how much I have lost and divided it by the number of days."
"The very scientific way."
"I guess you can say that. At this projected rate of weight loss, I will weigh 160 lbs again by Tuesday, May 2, 2017."
"Wow...that sounds like a long time."
"Well, I don't think I can do it any quicker, not really. The math is the math.....basically a pound of fat is 3,500 calories. So, if I burn 500 calories a day more than I eat, then I should lose 1 pound a week, on average. So far, I have lost 3.2 pounds, so actually I am losing more than the average that I calculated, but not much more."
"That's pretty good."
"Thank you. I have been walking a LOT to achieve that."
"How far have you been walking?"
"About the distance between our house and Disneyland in Anaheim...over 80 miles in 2 weeks."
"That's pretty far."
"So, that is going to be the hard part for me, keeping up this pace of doing over 10,000 steps every day."
"I believe it."
"Ok, so that's a pretty good introduction to each of us. By the way, I am 60 years old, compared to your 25. This week let's find some experts to interview who can tell us more about diet, weight loss, and weight gain strategies. Fair enough?"
"Ya....sounds good."
"Ok, well, you have your assignment, James...go talk to some people! I'll talk to some people too. We'll be back to our blog audience when we have more to report. Signing off for now!"
